Acts 6:1-7 NKJV
[1] Now, in those days, when the number of disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution [2] Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. [3] Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; [4] but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” [5] And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, [6] whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. [7] Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Actions speak louder than words.
Jesus was a teacher (Rabbi), but He was also a servant. He didn't speak from an unreachable podium. He was in the midst of the multitude. He was a healer. He came to the sick. He met the needs of the needy where they were. He set the example of what the functional church body should look like.
One of the biggest killers of the modern-day church is neglect. It's hard to be involved in a community where you feel unseen and unknown. A strong sense of belonging is part of what creates a welcoming environment. We are social creatures, but relationships require time, effort, and availability.
I know what it is like to be on the outside of a community. A lot of my feelings were self-imposed by being unavailable and closed off by active addiction. Part of the reason I feel so passionate about transparency is that I am not the only one who has had these experiences.
I am thankful to be a part of a church community that sees the value in outreach. I would also encourage anyone who feels left out to be bold enough to admit it to someone they know and trust. Be involved. Stay connected. If you already are, be the hands and feet that reach beyond where you are to the next person. "Jesus people" shouldn't be a country club in a gated community. We are supposed to be a free clinic for the hopeless and hurting. I am supposed to do what Jesus did.
